Family history buffs in Northumberland are turning to the web.

Northumberland County Council produced a video (below) to raise awareness of the facilities available to people wanting to know more about their ancestors.

It was uploaded onto internet video sharing site YouTube and has got more than 12,000 hits.

Walk highlights Humbleton Hill history

On Sunday the enjoyable combination of history and walking came together at an event near Wooler, when Peter Morrill led walkers around the battlefield of Homildon Hill.

Now called Humbleton Hill, the undulating landscape is much quieter than on September 14, 1402, when an English Army clashed with Scots who were returning from a raiding sortie that reached as far as Newcastle.

There was food and fun to be had over the weekend in Northumberland as shows and festivals made the most of the good weather.

Ingram Show enjoyed blue skies as it celebrated its centenary year.

The show is very much about the community and their competitions rather than stalls and stands selling things, and the proud tradition of good quality teas continued just as it was back in 1909 at the tea and sports day.

Ingram is looking ahead to a major social event in its calendar this weekend when the traditional Ingram Show takes place in the village on Saturday.

We take the opportunity to look at three interesting pictures of the village and the surrounding valley from the Journal's photographic archive.

Ingram School was enjoying a celebration almost 60 years ago, too, in our first picture. The school is holding its Christmas party in the early 1950s, with headteacher Mrs Proudlock presiding.

Picture gallery: Children's Countryside Day at Wooler

Around 1,500 schoolchildren from across the region spent yesterday in a showfield near Wooler learning about the importance of the countryside.

A total of 40 schools from Northumberland and Tyne and Wear attended Glendale Agricultural Society's Children's Countryside Day.

Billed as the Gateway to the Cheviots, Wooler is a market town with an interesting past.

Close by are Yeavering Bell, a hill crowned by a large Iron Age fort, and Humbleton Hill, the site of a Scottish defeat at the hands of Harry Hotspur in 1402 that is mentioned at the beginning of Shakespeare's play Henry IV.
